MAYAMOHINI --REVIEW
At a time when big banner films and movies with superstars like Mammootty and Mohanlal in the lead are falling flat at the box office, Mayamohini with Dileep in the lead is like a whiff of fresh air!
Story
Story of Mayamohini revolves around an ancestral home called Vadakedathu tharavad. Appumama is now the karnavar of the house. He is a bachelor and lives for the well being of his cousin Bala Krishnan (Biju Menon). Bala Krishnan is too innocent. Lakshmi Narayanan (Baburaj), an advocate, who is ten years elder to him is his only friend. Lakshmi Narayanan encourages him to start a business. But astrologers predicted that Bala Krisnan's field is not business. His business begins to shatter one by one.
Overall, Mayamohini is an enjoyable roller-coaster ride filled with lot of fun filled moments. Watch it only if you promise to keep your brains aside while watching!
Strengths – What should we expect?
Mayamohini is a comic caper and director Jose Thomas seems very focussed throughout the film. His intention is only to keep the audience in splits, and that he does very convincingly. Visuals by Anil Nair and music by Berny-Ignatius’ is apt for the mood of the film. The first half of Mayamohini is extremely fast and the audience does not get the opportunity to think too much. You are engrossed with the amount of comic activities that are happening. The highlight of Mayamohini is without doubt the brilliant performance by the lead actors, especially Dileep. Make up on Dileep by Roshan is excellent. The transformation of Dileep to a seductress was too good.
Weakness – What is to be ignored?
The second half of Mayamohini could have been more crispier as it slows down to a great extent. Editor Lijo Paul could have easily reduced 15-20 minutes of the film. Director Jose Thomas could have avoided making the second half so serious. Mayamohini lacks a great script and the fun filled screenplay by Udayakrishna-Siby K. Thomas could have been better. Besides, the film gets more and more predictable towards the end, which is a drawback.
Performances
Dileep, Baburaj and Biju Menon are the USP of Mayamohini. Baburaj, who was deeply appreciated for the ease in which he portrayed his role in Salt and Pepper has done it again. Baburaj, with his serious looks and amazing dialogue delivery leave the audience in splits. Baburaj, along with Biju Menon are able to strike a chord with the audience. Dileep, who plays the role of Biju Menon's North Indian wife is an absolute delight to watch. Dileep's comic timing and his various comic capers can make the audience roll out with laughter. Though Mythili and Lakshmi Rai were good, they didn't have much to do. The rest of the star-cast gave a decent performance.

Dileep is going to play a full length female character in Malayalam film directed by Jose Thomas named “Maya Mohini”. Biju Menon is also appear in a lead role. Script id done by Udayakrishna- Sibi K Thomas. The leading ladies will be Lakshmi Rai and Maithili.

Ace filmmaker Lal Jose seems to have hit upon the right blend of ingredients to make movies that cater to the tastes of viewers in Kerala. After the success of ‘Neelathamara' and ‘Elsamma Enna Aankutty,' Lal is on a hat trick as he dishes out his latest movie, ‘Spanish Masala,' which reaches theatres today.
“‘Spanish Masala' tells the story of an illegal immigrant in Europe. The attempt to better their financial circumstances by hook or by crook is a common story of some immigrants in Europe and there are many Indians, including Malayalis, who eke out a living as illegal immigrants in these countries,” narrates Lal. Instead of a grim, realistic exploration of the issue and its reasons, Lal adds a generous helping of humour to his movie ‘Spanish Masala,' a major portion of which has been shot in Spain. The result is a sweet and spicy tale that blends the travails of an illegal immigrant with the lives of the Malayali diaspora in Spain. Perhaps this is the first time that mainstream Malayalam cinema industry attempts to focus on the Malayali presence in Europe after delightful ventures such as ‘Veruthe Oru Pinakkam' (shot in France) and ‘Madannamaar Londonyil,' and more recently ‘Akashgopuram' (in the United Kingdom).
“Initially, we planned to set the film in the United Kingdom. But then we realised that it is quite difficult to find Malayalis who do not know at least a smattering of English. So we relocated the story to Spain where the hero as well the Indian crew were completely at sea as none of us knew any Spanish,” laughs Lal.
Two cultures
Although Spanish was alien to the Indian cast and crew, Lal points out that once the shooting began, “there is a universal language of cinema and then we were all speaking in the same voice.”
The film is about Charlie, a mimic from Kerala who only knows Malayalam and a few words of English. He goes to Spain with a music troupe for a programme. But once they reach Spain, Charlie vanishes into the crowd to become another name and number in the long list of visitors who disappear from the eyes of officialdom. Charlie lands in a soup and his desperate need to earn his daily bread forces him to become the cook in a rich Spanish household.
As Dileep and Lal come together after an interval, expectations are high as they are a win-win combination despite a film like ‘Mulla,' that did not really blossom at the marquee. “The expectations unnerve me a little bit. But the reason why Dileep and I click as a team is because our tastes are completely different, whether be it in cinema, music or sense of humour,” feels Lal.
Another reason for the hype is the fact that Lal is working with scenarist Benny P. Nayarambalam who had scripted Lal's superhit ‘Chandupottu.' Vidyasagar, Lal's favourite music director, scores lyrics composed by Venugopal. Kunchacko Boban, Biju Menon, Kalaranjani and Vinaya Prasad play important roles in the film. “Chackochen and Biju enact Malayalis working in Spain.
“We conducted auditions in Spain and Vienna to select actors who play the Spanish characters. The heroine, Austrian model and actor Daniela Zacherl, is a Viennese hip-hop dancer who studied acting in the United Kingdom,” says Lal. Spanish, English and Malayalam are spoken in this film. “How the languages gel and why Malayalam is spoken in a Spanish household will all be explained on the screen,” says a tight-lipped Lal who is determined to preserve the flavour of the film till it reaches theatres.
Come February 10, Lal is testing new waters with his production house LJ Films, which is producing its first movie, ‘Diamond Necklace,' which will be directed by him.
Iqbal Kuttipuram (who wrote ‘Arabikatha') and Lal are working together after eight years. Iqbal tells the story of a man and three women. Fahad Fazil, Samvaratha Sunil, Amala Paul and newcomer Anusree play the main roles in the movie that will be shot in Dubai. Lal had participated in a reality show called ‘Big Break' on Surya TV and Anusree was the winner of the show.
"It is the beginning of a dream to locate new directions for Malayalam cinema. Many a time, I am unable to take up a new film because of previous commitments. I hope to give young directors the opportunity to launch their careers and also refresh Malayalam cinema with their vision and visual narratives,” says Lal.

What happens to this relationship and how Charlie comes into the picture forms the crux of this family entertainer.

The film is a romantic comedy, scripted by Benny P Nayarambalam, and shot extensively in Spain.
Austrian born dancer and model Daniela Zacherl play the heroine in the film. Kunchacko Boban, Biju Menon and Vinaya Prasad also include the film’s main cast.
Dileep plays a mimicry artiste who illegally migrates to Spain, after reaching there for a show. There he becomes friends with a girl named Camilla. It’s their romance that goes beyond borders and languages, which is the main focus of the film.

MEGA HIT OF 2011--VELLARIPRAVINTE CHANGATHY
Malayalam cinema is in retro mood these days. In the last couple of months, we have seen films digging into the history of the industry or setting the story in the past. The latest attempt of this kind is Vellaripravinte Changathi directed by Akku Akbar with Dileep, Kavya Madhavan and Manoj K Jayan in the lead.
In the beginning it feels like a film within a film. Then it goes deep into the history of the industry. And, in the end it just becomes a love story of yesteryears with a tragic end.
At the outset we are shown how technology and digital stylisation are taking over, a fact rued by the top honcho of Gemini Lab, played by safari-suited Vijayraghavan. He employs a youngster, Manikunju (Indrajith), who has a reference letter from his home state, Kerala [ Images ]. The young man wants to make a living in the film industry and there is some philosophising about how fate plays an important part in making it big in films.
Manikunju is posted in the 'ghost house', a place where unclaimed or unreleased films are stored. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the history of Malayalam cinema, and arranges to see one such unclaimed film.
The film he watches is the sepia-tinted inter-religious love story typical of the seventies, where two neighbours, Ravi (Dileep) and Sulekha (Kavya Madhavan [ Images ]), who have grown up together, realise they are in love when they become young adults. The third angle in the story is Basheer (Manoj K Jayan) who is Sulekha's elder brother and considers Ravi to be his best friend.
The reel of the old film breaks around the interval point. Post-interval we come to know that the path-breaking film that never saw the light of day was directed by Manikunju's father Augustine Joseph, who had committed suicide due to financial difficulties.
The script by Anil G S goes haywire after this point as it tries to put together the story of the people behind this film. All of them were newcomers at a time when stars like Prem Nazir and Sathyan were at their peak. As the film moves to a climax, Manikunju realises that the actors who had played the roles, Shajahan (Dileep) and Mary Varghese (Kavya Madhavan) were in love as well, and had eloped into obscurity on the last day of the shoot.
Vellaripravinte Changathi has a rather implausible ending when the film that has been in the cans for nearly 41 years is formally released.
Dileep does his best mimicking the leading men of that era. Kavya, as the overly made-up heroine of those days, has nothing impressive to do. Only, Manoj K Jayan as the loud Basheer does have something that keeps our focus on him.
